We have conceived and designed a monumental ‘Claude Glass’ in a contemporary idiom. In common with its historical antecedent it will not be something to look at in itself but rather a means to view the changing landscape between Falkirk and Grangemouth. However an object of this scale would also sit in the landscape itself – Its vertical scale creating new desire lines. We want to use an existing and commonplace structure, the MS3 Road traffic information system structure as a support for our big black mirror - However instead of transmitting road traffic and safety information the mirror would display the landscape in a giant billboard sized display on darkened and reflective glass. As an object in a landscape the structure is intended not to be regarded as a thing in its own right but as a means of seeing the landscape differently. However as its function becomes apparent the MS3 will seem more extraordinary and even surreal. The mirror could be used to frame views of the Kelpies, the Stadium, the middle, fore and backgrounds and the distant prospect of mountains from Falkirk. It will serve much as the Claude Glass did to place the viewer, like a dot on the landscape. We like the idea of a prominent roadside location for this project. This would be road traffic information that does not relate to the flow of people through a place but rather locates them in it.
