My Feature
Stone walls, mosses, crinkles and crevices -- a fabric of cotton, linen and woollen yarns.
Biography
I am a handweaver inspired by the landscape around my home to create beautiful, expressive but still functional fabrics. I aim to remove much of the geometry associated with weaving by mixing yarns to create unusual textures and working with many colours to create a painterly effect -- at least that's the idea, it doesn't always work! I'm not in the business of producing the same item over and over again, that's what power looms were invented to do. Experimenting takes up an increasingly large part of my time but when something works I'll sit down and produce a handful, aka 'limited edition'. I tend to produce classic scarves and experimental throws but once in a while I'll be asked to produce something unusual such as the silk and paper fabric I wove recently for a client's wardrobe doors! Inspired by the inside of a seashell it was designed to bring something of the sea into a landlocked inland home. As much as I enjoy designing, it is the actual making of a fabric which keeps me going back to my loom each day to see what else I can produce that reflects the wonderful landscape in which I live and work.
I share this fascination with others through workshops and courses held at my studio and occasionally with groups of children who all want to see how these amazing machines called looms actually work!
