Biography
Mister Sushi (Alex to his mother) uprooted himself from the North-Western town of Ulverston in 2001 and headed for the big smoke of London.
Since then he has successfully emerged himself in the world of music,Its not been an easy ride though after a great number of knock backs Mister Sushi managed to swing himself a warm up set at the Electro night A1 People Live! held at the Bug Bar. From here he went on to DJ at a number of venues within the South London area including The Dog Star, Plan B and The Telegraph.
In 2003 Mister Sushi firmly established himself as a force to be reckoned with when he won the Vestax DJ of the year; however this was just the tip of the iceberg!
2004 saw Mister Sushi beat off over a thousand entries and won the Dance category at the highly regarded Diesel-U-Music awards, judged by Trustthe DJ and DJ Mag.....
On the awards night Mister Sushi worked his magic on the Legendary Fabric sound system, where he won over the crowd with his up front blend of Breaks, Electro and Mash Ups.
Moving on from the Diesel award Mister Sushi has performed a number of amazing sets with his personal favourite being his first ever festival appearance at The Secret Garden, where he dj's alongside the likes of The Loose Cannons, Eddy Temple Morris and Go Home Productions to name but a few.
The former months of 2005 saw Mister Sushi achieve further recognition on the London DJ circuit, gaining him his first residency in the capital at the tremendously rated Cathouse parties held at the Telegraph in Brixton...
Throwing himself further more into the Breaks scene he began working at the worldly respected label Botchit & Scarper (where he still resides today), in turn gaining a fortnightly show on the online radio station Breaks FM.
After storming the Diesel-U-Music tour in April, taking in a date at Chibuku Shake Shake where he wiped up the crowd into a full on frenzy before the mighty Roni Size graced the decks. On the Brighton date of the tour he found a like minded passion for music in all round good guy Tom Middleton when he mixed it up with him at the Ocean Rooms.
2005has also seen Mister Sushi already performing sets alongside the likesof Adam Freeland, Atomic Hooligan, Friendly, Coburn, Soto, General Midi, Paul Arnold, Future Funk Squad, Slyde, Ollywood, Move Ya! andDiesel (X-Press 2) to name but a few.
The latter half of 2005 saw Mister Sushi become a DJ of high demand and whilst playing all over the place he was itching to set up his own event. As luck would have it the lovely lady that is Livvy approached Botchit & Scarper and the now successful 44 parties were born and after a few near fatal misses the night has found the night found true home at the genre breaking East London venue 93 Feet East. Along side other 44 events at Egg and more recently throwing a second monthly knees up at the Pool Bar.
The idea behind 44 was to put on events that take in many different styles of music and stick the fingers up to the parties where you hear just one genre all night long...
This has seen Mister Sushi really branch out musical, his sets began to take in more of the Electro and Techno sounds that had been filtering through. Never one to be lazy he still managed to maintain the precise mixing techniques that he has become renowned for.
2006 saw a move into the world of production, working along side Itchy Kid on original tracks and remixes for the likes of Bonobo, The Loose Cannons, LBJ plus a few crafty unofficial reworkings picking up major support from both dj's and radio presenters across the land... His work alongside Itchy Kid also led him to performing live drums and decks shows, heightening dj sets ten fold. Aside from dj'ing and producing Mister Sushi also took up a role in music journalism, writing reviews and features for the likes of Blow Back, ATM, DMC Update, Music Week and other publications...
They say opportunity knocks, well the year that followed certainly did knock!
Kicking off the year with dj sets across the UK and dipping his toes in European waters, performing in France and Germany. The pull of radio came a calling once again and he took up a bi-weekly show on Ibreaks, throwing down the eclecticism cards and opening up the vaults of his music collection.
For the later half of 2007 Mister Sushi up sticks and relocated to the electronic melting pot of Berlin, embracing every inch of the city... The move to Berlin saw a new alias develop (Duncan Whiteley) and a link up with like minded producer and all rounder Lars Moston. Upon meeting the two hit it off both as friends and music partners, combining their musical influences with ease.
A raft of genre meddling remixes followed as the duo laid down electronic shades on the likes of likes of indie darlings The Raveonettes, game boy techno filth from Finland inthe form of Huoratron and taking the organic breakbeat of ILS down thewarped techno path...
The also turned their hands to the Loose Cannons new project Lego Johnson and rubbed up Si Begg in the most glitched out way possible!
Now residing in the UK once again and currently working along side a whole bunch of like minded folk and relaunching the legendary 44 parties, its all go at the house of sushi and it looks set to continue. He can still be found working along side Lars Moston and is keepingdance floors bouncing with his upfront mixing andgenre pushing sets.
The one question everyone is asking... When does this guy actually find time to sleep???
