My Feature

'IMPRESSIONS OF FUNGI - THE FOREST FLOOR' Silk Paint on Silk. In this artist's impression of the hidden world of the forest floor, the flow of paint with a natural substance, silk, interprets shape and colour in a unique way. It brings to life the primeval world below our feet, as rich in texture and variety of form as the world above.

Biography

Noelle was born in Lancashire, but lived in Walney Island as a young child. At the age of 19 she moved to Singapore, where she learned to paint on silk. She spent several years in Malta, and on returning to the UK she settled in Dumfriesshire. After gaining a City & Guilds in silkpainting, she opened her own gallery/studio in the Euchan Glen, just outside Sanquhar, and began to exhibit widely. She has held 28 solo and 40 joint exhibitions to date, and also teaches silk painting.
Silk painting is an ancient art form which is now enjoying a modern ‘renaissance’ with endless possibilities for experimentation and development. By using different types of silk, each with its own quality and sheen, she lets her imagination run free. The paint and silk flow together without the use of ‘gutta’ lines to separate the colours, creating fluid, ethereal effects, whilst the use of gutta results in vibrant designs in a more decorative style. Many of the paintings are impressions – ‘the spirit of place’ or may become dreamscapes from imagination – mythology – ‘the other world’. The fluid quality of a natural material, silk, enhances these ideas.
She experiments with salt, ink, wax and shibori techniques, so that each painting becomes unique. She also hand-beads some of her paintings, which adds another dimension to the silk. The theme ‘Natural Elements Translated Into Silk’ runs through her work. Colour is an important element of her work, and she often uses combinations of strong colours in addition to the softer tones usually associated with silk painting.
She is inspired by natural images, both real and imaginary, and find the interplay of paint with a natural substance, silk, fascinating and unpredictable.
She lets her imagination run free with the flow of paint, and always tries to produce work in a variety of subject matter, to which she gives a unique interpretation, so that no two paintings are alike.
All her works are one-off originals, and she never produces silk prints, cards or copies from her images, so that each piece of work remains original and unique.
